More often than not—you’ll notice a change in your heating system before it completely breaks down. Sometimes homeowners notice their furnace short-cycling and want to know how serious the problem is and how to fix it.
What is Furnace Short-Cycling?
When the temperature in your home falls below what is set on the thermostat—the furnace turns on and pumps warm air throughout the home. The furnace stays on until the thermostat registers an increase in temperature, and then sends a signal to the furnace to turn off. This process is known as a furnace cycle.
A short-cycle is when the furnace repeatedly turns on and off—never reaching the desired temperature. There are a number of reasons for a furnace short-cycling, including:
- restricted air flow from a dirty air filter or blocked air vents.
- an incorrectly installed—or malfunctioning—thermostat.
- improperly sized furnace for the home.
The severity of furnace short-cycling depends on the underlying cause of the problem. A blocked air vent or dirty air filter can be easily remedied—but an improperly sized system will require an upgrade.
If you notice that your furnace is turning on and off—first you’ll want to ensure that nothing is blocking registers and vents and that the air filter is clean. If that doesn’t fix the problem—you’ll want to schedule a furnace service call to have a certified professional check out the system. Ignoring the problem could cause a complete breakdown.
