Purchasing a new cooling system can be costly. It’s not something homeowners want to do needlessly. But how do you know when it’s time to get a new air conditioner? We’ve compiled a list of the top ways to recognize when it’s time for an AC replacement.
It’s over 20 years old.
If your air conditioner is over 20 years old, it’s time to replace it. If it’s over 10-15 years old, but needs to be fixed all the time, it’s better to invest in a new unit. At this age, the system is at the end of its lifespan, and it’s also using outdated technology. Air conditioners generally last 10-15 years on average, but upgrading to a new air conditioner will improve operation, home comfort and efficiency.
It needs to be repaired, A LOT.
If you’re noticing that your AC requires repairs more often than not, that’s a major sign that it’s nearing the end of its life. An air conditioner that keeps failing or breaking down is an air conditioner that is better off being replaced – it is more cost effective to replace a system than to keep spending money on multiple repairs.
The warranty period is over.
Manufacturers provide system warranties that cover the costs of replacement parts. But, once the warranty ends, you have to pay for parts out of pocket. If your HVAC system is no longer under warranty and requires frequent repairs, it makes more sense to replace it. Then, you’ll have the protection of a new warranty.
It’s been neglected.
What’s the maintenance history of your AC? An air conditioner that’s been properly maintained will last longer than one that’s been neglected. If your AC has been neglected or missed several maintenance appointments, it might be time for a replacement – especially if you’re having other issues with it.
It’s no longer efficient.
Older ACs aren’t as efficient as new models. In fact, replacing your old unit with a newer one can save you money in energy costs and reduce your environmental impact. You can tell if your AC is inefficient by looking at how quickly it cools your home and by reviewing your energy bills. If you notice they’ve been increasing drastically, it is likely due to an inefficient AC.
The cost to repair it is 50% or more of the cost of a new one.
Finally, the general rule of thumb in the HVAC world when it comes to knowing when it’s time to replace your AC is this: if the repair is going to cost you half of the cost of a new unit, you’re better off replacing it. Salvaging a unit that requires a repair of that amount usually means the system is on its last legs. It is always best to replace a system with that kind of required repair, and start with a new unit and new warranty coverage.
