Gas Fireplace Safety Tips
When using a gas fireplace, safety should always come first. Follow these technician-approved tips to keep your home protected:
- Have your gas fireplace inspected by a licensed technician at least once a year.
- Schedule maintenance early—fall is the busiest season for fireplace service.
- Never reposition gas fireplace logs, as this can block vents and disrupt airflow.
- Install a working carbon monoxide detector near your fireplace.
- Never attempt DIY repairs; all installation and service should be handled by certified professionals.
- Do not leave your gas fireplace unattended while operating.
- If you smell gas, turn the fireplace off, leave your home immediately, and call HAMCO for emergency service.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s safety and operating instructions.
- Avoid touching the fireplace while it’s running—it becomes extremely hot.
- Keep children and pets safely away from the fireplace at all times.
Gas Fireplace Troubleshooting Tips
Keeping your heat pump system cleaned, checked and maintained by a licensed professional not only improves efficiency and performance but also increases the system’s lifespan, helps prevent future breakdowns and maintains its warranty.
If Your Gas Fireplace Won’t Turn On
If your gas fireplace won’t turn on, it typically indicates an interference in the fuel supply or electrical system. Check the following before calling HAMCO:
- Check the Circuit Breaker: A power surge may have tripped your home’s circuit breaker preventing your gas fireplace from igniting. Check your home’s electrical panel and if the breaker is OFF, flip it to the ON position.
- Check the Pilot Light: The most common reason a gas fireplace won’t turn on is often an extinguished pilot light. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s direction to turn it back on.
- Is the Pilot Light Turning On and Off? This could be a potential issue with the thermocouple, you may need to call for repair
- Check the Fireplace Gas Valve: Make sure the valve is OPEN and is in the ON position.
Is the Fireplace Heating Up? If your gas fireplace isn’t heating up, this could be a potential issue with the thermocouple and you may need to call for repair.
If Your Fireplace Is Making Unusual Sounds or Smells
If your fireplace is producing unusual sounds or odors, it can be a sign that something isn’t working properly. Below are a few common issues and what to do if you notice them:
Unusual or Musty Odors
This is often caused by bacteria or buildup inside the unit. Cleaning the fireplace interior and flue may help, or you can contact HAMCO for professional fireplace cleaning.
Burning Wire or Rotten Egg Smells
These odors may indicate a serious safety concern. Turn the fireplace off immediately, ventilate your home, and contact a professional for repairs before using it again.
High-Pitched or Shrieking Noises
A loud shrieking sound typically points to a failing blower motor. This issue should be addressed right away by a technician.
Low Rumbling or Vibrating Sounds
Rumbling noises are often caused by debris in the burner. Once the fireplace has fully cooled, turn it off and carefully vacuum the burner area.
Gas Fireplace Frequently Asked Questions
How Do Gas Fireplaces Vent?
Most modern gas fireplaces and inserts are direct vent (DV) systems. These units have a sealed glass front that separates the combustion process from your living space. All combustion air is drawn from outside the home through a coaxial vent pipe, while exhaust gases are safely expelled through an inner pipe.
Direct vent systems help maintain indoor air quality and can be vented either horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through the roof, depending on your home’s layout.
How Do I Light the Pilot?
Important: Always remove the glass front before lighting the pilot.
Basic steps:
- Locate and open the gas supply valve.
- Find the pilot assembly and igniter inside the firebox.
- Turn the valve control knob to the PILOT position and press it in.
- While holding the knob, press the igniter button until the pilot lights.
- Continue holding the knob for 30 seconds, then release.
- If the pilot stays lit, turn the knob to ON, replace the glass securely, and turn the unit on using the switch or remote.
If the pilot won’t stay lit, turn off the gas and contact HAMCO for service.
Note: Some units use electronic ignition and do not require manual pilot lighting.
How Do I Remove the Glass?
Glass removal methods vary by model. Always refer to your installation manual or owner’s guide for specific instructions.
Why Is the Glass So Hot?
Gas fireplace glass becomes extremely hot during operation. Use caution at all times:
- Supervise children closely
- Do not operate without protective barriers
- Keep combustible items such as furniture, clothing, and drapes at a safe distance
Can I Turn the Pilot Off in the Summer?
In high-humidity climates, leaving the pilot on is often recommended. Otherwise, you may turn it off if the fireplace won’t be used for an extended period. When needed, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it safely.
Does a Direct Vent Fireplace Need an Outside Wall?
No. Direct vent systems offer flexible installation options. Venting can run horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through the roof. HAMCO can help determine the best venting solution for your home’s layout.
How Do I Clean the Glass?
Proper glass cleaning is essential, especially after the first 10 continuous hours of use, as residue can permanently etch the glass if left untreated.
- Ensure the fireplace is completely cool and the gas is turned off.
- Remove the front trim or louvers and carefully take out the glass assembly according to your manual.
- Clean both sides using a soft cloth with non-ammonia glass cleaner or white vinegar.
- For heavier buildup, use a gas fireplace–approved glass cleaner recommended by your dealer.
- Reinstall the glass securely before operating the fireplace again.
Clean the glass as needed afterward, especially when adding new ember material. Never use abrasive cleaners or cloths.
