- Check the Circuit Breaker: A power surge may have tripped your home’s circuit breaker preventing your gas fireplace from igniting. Check your home’s electrical panel and if the breaker is OFF, flip it to the ON position.
- Check the Pilot Light: The most common reason a gas fireplace won’t turn on is often an extinguished pilot light. If it’s out, follow the manufacturer’s direction to turn it back on.
- Is the Pilot Light Turning On and Off? This could be a potential issue with the thermocouple, you may need to call for repair
- Check the Fireplace Gas Valve: Make sure the valve is OPEN and is in the ON position.

How Do Gas Fireplaces Vent?
Most modern gas fireplaces and inserts are direct vent (DV) systems. These units have a sealed glass front that separates the combustion process from your living space. All combustion air is drawn from outside the home through a coaxial vent pipe, while exhaust gases are safely expelled through an inner pipe.
Direct vent systems help maintain indoor air quality and can be vented either horizontally through an exterior wall or vertically through the roof, depending on your home’s layout.
How Do I Light the Pilot?
Important: Always remove the glass front before lighting the pilot.
Basic steps:
- Locate and open the gas supply valve.
- Find the pilot assembly and igniter inside the firebox.
- Turn the valve control knob to the PILOT position and press it in.
- While holding the knob, press the igniter button until the pilot lights.
- Continue holding the knob for 30 seconds, then release.
- If the pilot stays lit, turn the knob to ON, replace the glass securely, and turn the unit on using the switch or remote.
If the pilot won’t stay lit, turn off the gas and contact HAMCO for service.
Note: Some units use electronic ignition and do not require manual pilot lighting.
How Do I Remove the Glass?

Why Is the Glass So Hot?
Gas fireplace glass becomes extremely hot during operation. Use caution at all times:
- Supervise children closely
- Do not operate without protective barriers
- Keep combustible items such as furniture, clothing, and drapes at a safe distance
Can I Turn the Pilot Off in the Summer?
In high-humidity climates, leaving the pilot on is often recommended. Otherwise, you may turn it off if the fireplace won’t be used for an extended period. When needed, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it safely.

How Do I Clean the Glass?
Proper glass cleaning is essential, especially after the first 10 continuous hours of use, as residue can permanently etch the glass if left untreated.
- Ensure the fireplace is completely cool and the gas is turned off.
- Remove the front trim or louvers and carefully take out the glass assembly according to your manual.
- Clean both sides using a soft cloth with non-ammonia glass cleaner or white vinegar.
- For heavier buildup, use a gas fireplace–approved glass cleaner recommended by your dealer.
- Reinstall the glass securely before operating the fireplace again.
Clean the glass as needed afterward, especially when adding new ember material. Never use abrasive cleaners or cloths.
