How to Apply: Heat Pump Grants & Rebates
Heat pumps offer an efficient, year-round solution for home comfort – keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, all while reducing your energy costs and carbon footprint. Thanks to programs like the Canada Greener Homes Loan and the Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate (HER), upgrading to a heat pump is more affordable than ever.
Canada Greener Homes Loan
The Canada Greener Homes Loan is an interest-free financing program designed to help Canadian homeowners make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. You can access an unsecured loan of $5,000 to $40,000, repayable over 10 years. This makes it easier than ever to upgrade your home’s HVAC system, including installing a heat pump.
Eligibility
To qualify for the loan, you must meet the following criteria:
- Canadian Residency: Applicants must be Canadian residents.
- Property Type: The loan is available for owner-occupied single-family homes, townhouses, and semi-detached homes. Rental or vacation properties are not eligible.
- Pre-Retrofit Energy Evaluation: A certified energy advisor must assess your home’s energy efficiency before the retrofit begins. They will provide upgrade recommendations and help determine the loan amount.
- Program Guidelines: All retrofits must follow program guidelines, including using approved contractors.
Eligible Retrofits
The loan can cover various energy-efficient upgrades, including:
- Space and water heating
- Smart thermostats
- Renewable energy systems
- Insulation and air-sealing
- Windows and doors
- Resiliency measures
How to Apply for the Canada Greener Homes Loan
- Complete an Energy Assessment: Schedule a visit with a certified energy advisor to receive a full report on your home’s energy efficiency.
- Review Loan Options: Based on the energy assessment, you can determine the loan amount you need.
- Prepare Documentation: Gather documents such as proof of residence, property details, and the energy assessment report.
- Submit Your Application: Apply online or through your local government office with the necessary documents.
- Await Approval: Once your application is approved, you’ll receive the funds to start your home upgrades.
Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) Program
The Enbridge Gas Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) program helps homeowners reduce the cost of upgrading their homes with energy-efficient solutions, including heat pumps. You can receive up to $5,000 in rebates for eligible upgrades.
Qualifying Rebates
- Air Source Heat Pump: Up to $1,000
- Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump: Up to $2,000
- Ground Source Heat Pump Replacement: Up to $3,000
- Ground Source Heat Pump Full System: Up to $1,500
- Heat Pump Water Heater: Up to $500
- Attic Insulation: Up to $1,500
- Exposed Floor Insulation: $300
- Exterior Wall Insulation: Up to $3,600
- Basement Insulation: Up to $3,500
- Air Sealing: Up to $180
- Windows/Doors/Sliding Doors/Skylights: $50 Each
Maximum Rebate: You can receive up to $5,000 in total for qualifying upgrades.
Eligibility
To qualify for the HER program, you must meet these criteria:
- No Renovations Started: The upgrades must be done after the initial energy evaluation.
- Enbridge Gas Heating: You must use Enbridge Gas-supplied natural gas for space heating at the time of your assessments.
- Eligible Property Types: Detached, semi-detached, row townhouses, or mobile homes with permanent foundations are eligible.
How the HER Program Works
- Initial Energy Evaluation: Contact an Enbridge Gas-approved service organization to assess your home’s energy efficiency. A certified energy advisor will visit your home and recommend improvements.
- Receive Upgrade Recommendations: Based on the evaluation, the energy advisor will provide a detailed report on the most effective upgrades for your home.
- Complete Required Upgrades: Complete at least two of the recommended energy-saving upgrades, such as installing a heat pump system.
- Follow-Up Energy Evaluation: After the upgrades are completed, you must schedule a follow-up assessment within 120 days of the initial evaluation or by December 31, 2025.
- Claim Your Rebates: After the follow-up assessment, you can submit your rebate application. Rebate cheques, including a $600 reimbursement for the evaluation costs, will be issued starting in January 2025.

Update: We just had our annual maintenance done and as usual, the booking and service were done efficiently and professionally. Cameron was pleasant and before servicing the... furnace and AC he was happy to answer a couple questions I had. Pleased once again with Hamco's service.We were recently faced with our 17-year-old furnace breaking down and beyond repair. Despite the extremely cold weather that resulted in a larger number of service needs for Hamco, Najim met with us in just over 24 hours, spent time accessing and explaining the situation and offering the best options for the needed replacement. He worked to get us up and running quickly with a Saturday install and left us with a space heater to ease discomfort overnight. He was personable, knowledgeable and took time to ensure we were happy with the decision we made. It wasn't an expense we had planned for but Najim eased the situation with his excellent customer service. He was happy to answer any questions we had and worked to ensure we got the best price and service possible. Veronika and Shemar arrived early the next day to replace our furnace with a new Daikin. After doing a significant amount of research I contracted with HAMCO to install a heat pump to replace my aging air conditioner, and a new furnace. Andrew Vasilak handled... the transaction, and he was terrific to deal with. He was helpful, informative, and there were no high pressure sales tactics. The quote was identical to what I paid.The installation of the products was superb! Both my new heat pump and furnace were installed in one day. The four men who did the installation were on time, dependable and thorough. Since the installation the heat pump has been superb. Air quality in the house is significantly better, and the air temperature has been constant. I had one minor problem, and called HAMCO late at night on a long holiday weekend for assistance. I had a return phone call back in five minutes, a repairman out to my house the next morning, and the problem was fixed quickly. The service technician who dealt with my issue was professional, polite and responsive.HAMCO has been around since 1946. They are an established Hamilton company that offers old fashioned, high quality service at a fair price. I would not hesitate to recommend them.Update: May 12/26I just had HAMCO into perform an annual inspection of my heat pump, furnace and water heater. Christian did an amazing job! What Is a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps are compact 2-in-1 heating systems that work efficiently and fairly quietly. Heat pumps both heat and cool by transferring energy. There are both ducted and ductless heat pumps. If your space doesn’t have ductwork, you can have a ductless heat pump installed. In addition to ductless and ducted, there are single-zone and multi-zone heat pumps.
Ductless single-zone heat pumps are especially excellent for heating small spaces like studios and offices. Multi-zone heat pumps make it easy to control the temperature in each area of your house. With a single outdoor unit, a multi-zone heat pump lets you independently control temperatures in up to 8 separate zones.
Regardless if it’s ducted or ductless, or single-zone versus multi-zone, heat pumps take less energy to operate and that saves you money on your energy bills.
What Is a Hybrid Heating System?
A hybrid heating system is a system that allows for maximum energy efficiency as it combines the power of two systems. This configuration consists of a heat pump and a gas-powered furnace. This combination of heating systems allows you to heat your home in the most efficient way possible. The electric air-source heat pump heats your home when temperatures are moderate and electricity rates are low, while the gas furnace kicks in when it’s especially cold outside or when electricity rates are at their peak.
Plus, they’re super easy to operate. Smart controls automatically switch between the natural gas heat source and the electric heat pump based on whichever is the most efficient at the time. This way, you get energy-cost resiliency and the option to heat with natural gas or electric heat. And on top of all that, heat pumps are two-in-one HVAC systems. That means you will also have an air conditioner whether it’s a standalone heat pump or a hybrid system.
