Whole-Home Humidifiers
Increase Your Comfort with a Whole-Home Humidifier
Humidity in the home can be both helpful and harmful depending on the amount in the air. Too much humidity can leave a home feeling sweaty and hot, while not enough can make a home feel dry and uncomfortable. During the winter, many households across Ontario use whole-home humidifiers to maintain appropriate humidity levels in their home and improve their indoor air quality.

Common Questions About Whole-Home Humidifiers
What is a whole-home humidifier?
A whole-home humidifier is an HVAC system accessory that provides an even distribution of humidity throughout the entire house. A whole-home humidifier works to improve indoor air quality by dispersing water vapour throughout your home’s ductwork. Once the humidity level has been reached on the humidistat, the system will turn off to prevent over-humidifying the home.
How often should I change my humidifier pad?
Humidifiers are a great way to regulate humidity levels in your home, but these devices have filters called humidifier pads that need to be changed. Just like your furnace filter, a dirty pad can compromise your air quality and system efficiency. If you can’t remember the last time you changed your humidifier pad, it’s likely time to do it.
Humidifier Pad Replacement Guidelines
- Whole-Home Humidifiers: Pads should be changed at least once per season. We recommend you change it at the beginning of the winter season, which is when your humidifier works the hardest.
- Portable Units: Filters in these units need to be changed more frequently. You should change your portable humidifier pad at least every three months, and even more often if you live in an area with hard water.
Important: Never attempt to clean and reuse humidifier pads. Always replace them with new ones.
How is my humidifier controlled?
Humidifiers are equipped with a humidistat. The humidistat is typically installed in the same place as the whole-home humidifier, and that’s usually in the basement. Humidistats are similar to thermostats except they monitor and control the humidity in your house. They’re connected to your forced air heating system to allow for either the manual or automatic programming and adjustment of the humidity in your home.
How long does a whole-home humidifier last?
On average, a whole-home humidifier lasts 10 to 15 years. Factors such as water quality, frequency of use, and regular maintenance can affect its lifespan. Hard water, for example, may cause mineral buildup that reduces efficiency over time.
Is a whole-home humidifier better than a portable unit?
Yes. A whole-home humidifier regulates consistent humidity throughout your entire house, unlike portable units that only work in one room and need constant refilling. Whole-home systems are also quieter, require less upkeep, and provide better overall air quality.
How do I know if my HVAC system has a humidifier?
Many homeowners purchase a house without realizing a humidifier is already installed. To check, look near your furnace for equipment connected to both the furnace and a water supply. If you are uncertain, ask your HVAC provider or one of HAMCO’s technicians to confirm for you.
Benefits of a Whole-Home Humidifier
Healthy humidity levels in the home come with a variety of benefits and positive effects on the body. When you install a whole-home humidifier, you will notice the many benefits they offer. Some of these include:
- Healthier feeling hair and skin
- A warmer home without turning up the thermostat
- Reduced symptoms of allergies and asthma
- Lesser accumulation of dust on surfaces in the home
The Effects of Dry Air on the Home
If your home’s humidity level is too low, you will most likely be able to feel and see it. Low humidity levels, especially in the colder months, can lead to:
- Dry, chapped or cracked skin
- Dry throat, irritated sinuses or runny nose
- An increase in the symptoms of allergies or asthma
- Increased static electricity including shocks or fly-away hairs
- Damaged or splintering hardwood flooring or wooden furniture
- An increase in the presence of dust around the home
The Ideal Level of Humidity for Your Home
The ideal humidity level for your home is between 30-50%. Unfortunately, many homes dip below this in the winter, which can cause dry skin and contribute to allergies and asthma. Conversely, levels that are too high can lead to mold and furniture damage. Keeping your home humidity in check will prevent these issues.
