We can all agree that there are few things worse than going to take a shower only to find out there’s no more hot water. When it comes to water heaters, there are two options, standard tank models and tankless units, with a lot of differences between the two.

Get into Hot Water
We’ll start with the most important fact, which is the amount of hot water each unit can supply. Standard tank units can only supply the various appliances and faucets around your home with what the tank holds. Whereas tankless units don’t have a reservoir, which means they heat the water as you need it and for as long as you need it. As long as you choose the right model for your supply needs, your relaxing hot shower should never be interrupted by a blast of cold water again.

Efficiency
Tankless water heaters are more efficient because they only heat water when you need it, unlike standard tank models, which constantly heat and reheat the water in the reservoir even if no one is home. The on-demand style of heating utilized by tankless models uses 24% to 34% less energy than the standby operation of standard tank models.

Utility Costs
As we noted above, tankless water heaters are more energy-efficient, which means you have the potential to reduce your monthly bills, however longer run times may eat away at future savings. Tankless are pricier than standard tank models but studies have shown that the average household can save hundreds of dollars every year by switching to a tankless unit.

If you are only staying in your home for 5 years, or less, it will be a moot point.

Lifespan/ Maintenance
When comparing the cost of the two styles of water heaters, it’s important to consider that tankless units have the potential to last longer than standard tank water heaters. However, keeping in mind that water quality in your region and regular descaling are key factors in ensuring the performance and life expectancy of the unit. Failure to do so will result in a short lifespan and potential performance issues.
